Natural Bridges

Cherrapunji, India is the wettest place on earth, and the natives have developed a clever and natural way to cross the many rivers of the region.

They have trained the secondary roots of ficus trees using a root-guidance system from other trees. Because the roots continue to grow, the bridges actually become stronger over time. Some of them are over 500 years old and can support the weight of 50 adults.
