Don’t like reading? Read on…

Just because you don’t enjoy reading a good book, doesn’t mean there aren’t many other uses for all of those books piled up in the attic.

Below are promotional images for Anagram Bookshop in Prague, by Kaspen.

The following sculptures were created by Tom Bendtsen.  Check out his site for his complete collection.

Most of them are real, but from what I can see the 3 photos one with the gangstas, knights fighting and the octopus are built in 3d software, still impressive and creative nonetheless

Why not just donate those books to people or a library instead of destroying them? -_-

I work for a large public library. People donate lots and LOTS of books. We have a marvelous book sale every year, raises money for the Friends of the Library, BUT…you should see the stuff that people try to donate. 50 years of National Geographic. Encyclopedia sets from 1949. Grandpa’s books that have sat in the basement for 25 years, covered with mildew, homes for spiders. Books that smell like cigarettes, books that smell like whatever food has been cooked in the house, books that have suspicious stains and a piece of toilet paper as a bookmark…

All of these people really feel the same way as you, Liz. Humans HATE to throw out books, or see them “desecrated”. My crackpot theory is that it all goes back to when books were a precious commodity, to be guarded with one’s life. Think about the burning of the library at Alexandria, or the controversy regarding so many books (some places still try to ban Huck Finn! F**in’ amazing!!) The image of Nazis burning books is seared on the collective unconscious. But most books nowadays are simple commodities, to be consumed and discarded like most other things these days.

Stack ‘em, carve ‘em, paint ‘em, these artists’ hearts are in the right place, as much so as the well meaning folks who donate useless smelly junk. Try to see it as a celebration of books, not a desecration!

  3. Sumi says:

seriously, this is amazing. i kind of agree with jamielo, its not like the books are destroyed, just reused in a new way.

  4. edi says:

desecrated is the right word to outcome this ‘efforts’

but this is the future of all old tech which the new pricks on the block can not understand.. or do not even think what this ‘crap’ was done to put out they from their own misery.

  5. Harley says:

If anyone ever did that to any of my books, I’d kill them. XD
    They do look awesome, though.

  6. E. Draycott says:

Wow, I am so impressed. Can you imagine the mind that created this?

  7. Robert Gouldy says:

I love books more than some but come on. It’s not like someone used the ONLY copy of the book to make art. These pics are cool! Even if some are photoshopped, they did a good job of it. Besides, if the book belongs to you, you can do with it what you want. Stop whining like they were rare first editions.

  8. I like it! very creative who those don’t like to read :)

  9. Unknown says:

I find this so wrong, how can you do that to books? Books are meant to read and learn from, not do art with. If you want to do art, do it with a paint brush or anything else. NOT a book!!!

Fabulous! What fun! Is it a destruction of marble to carve it into a statue? The hypersensitivity and lack of imagination of some of the comments are amazing…

  11. Leydy_t says:

I love 2 read. I believe in sitting down with a good book from time to time but after im done, what am i suppose to do with them ? they can have mine if they want them. These picture are awesome works of art, recycling at its best KEEP your Creativity going and those that dont like to read go grab a book

  14. Sir says:

This is so amazing. To all of you people distressed over the plight of books, I highly doubt that the artists would buy brand-spanking new books and cut them out or glue them or whatever(except for the Alice in Wonderland one…they should have used mine. Mine’s literally falling apart). I’ve had to dispose of lots of outdated books from my school library, and I only wish I’d thought of doing something like this.

  16. TIMe says:

    @Diane:
As well, I found the “Alice In Wonderland” adaptation, though inspired, disturbing, for it reminded me that I once owned a first edition of that same tale.
At the time, I was sharing a house with some guys who were not as enamored of the written word as I was. So, though I am pleased that my friends(?) chose not to freeze one winter’s night after having forgotten to order fuel oil for the empty tank in the basement, I was a bit more disturbed that the indiscriminate burning of books (and antique furniture) that were in my collection was the means of choice for keeping warm. Maybe I’m being hyper-sensitive, but I suspect that my house mates didn’t like me too much…;-)
Many years later, as I watched the morning network news while enjoying a quick cup of coffee before leaving for the office, I suddenly felt as if regret were being used as a bludgeon, under which abuse I was struggling to sustain myself. The newscaster had just announced that a first edition Alice In Wonderland had just sold at auction that morning for $1.3M, a first edition not unlike the one that was used to lessen the night’s chill so many years before.
So, though it’s great to curl up with a good book on a winter’s night while keeping warm by the fire, I don’t think I’ll ever be too distant from the heat I feel under the collar every time I recall that amazing experience of having once had, then lost, a treasured book. But it the loss of a book is my greatest loss then I do surely count my self blessed and most fortunate.

  17. Sarah says:

People saying “what a waste of books” are kind of stupid cause it’s obviously not. It’s displaying the awesome imagination and creativity of people…even i can see that and i’m only 15. And it’s not like there’s only one copy of these books in the world. If someone wanted to read it again they could just buy another copy or like borrow it from the library. Duh!

  18. Kim says:

That’s really impressive, I love to read… Would quite fancy a shelf made out of books though!

  19. eleanor says:

this is rather impressive artwork but as a bookworm it somehow seems wrong to do this to good books that could be passed on to other readers or given to charity

  20. Ventana says:

WOW! These are amazingly creative and the craftsmanship is impeccable! Congratulations to the artists.

  21. Ashley says:

It looks cool, but those poor books. :( I would have liked to have read them.

  22. Asilee says:

People are so quick to say something’s photoshopped but don’t know the
first thing to do when you open the application up. I suggest those who are saying “its photoshopped” or “fake!1111″ need to learn the basics of photoshop, do some tutorials, watch a few Adobe CS3 vids. Research photo-manipulation. Then study these pictures and then maybe your reason for “hating” can be valid. Until then, don’t right checks that your mouth/keyboard can’t cash.

P.S. I’m open to any retorts that need to be made towards me to my blog. Feel free.

I worked in a bookstore and while it hurt me the first few times I had to ‘strip’ a book (tear off the cover and return it to the publisher for credit), I got over it.

Burning books is a statement about control and these books weren’t used for that. This is nothing more than wonderfully recycled art. Beautiful work!

  25. Sammy says:

  28. Cara says:

    That is bloody cool! :D

  29. warbler says:

Wow, I like the picts – what’s with the waste comments? Tis is one of the few posts I’ve made or will ever make – what’s the lasting value of these posts? – nothing but momentary delusion that we are “connecting” and “interacting with someone”? I know it’s heresy, but it’s also a fact. I find wasting time like this MUCH worse that wasting a few trees.

  31. Ivan says:

Wow! amazing! i’d love to take my Visual Arts History book, cut out all the text and have a cool art flip book!!! (i wouldn’t feel bad i have two copies of the same text)

  32. Adrian Eden says:

  36. EBee says:

Just maybe the tower, etc were made to ‘stack up’ future reading, just with OCD.
Can i take a look at the book second up from the bottom, I’ve got a class in an hour…
    Very Creative.

While all the google-heads are debating getting photoshopped, I enjoyed your books pictures. I love when people can do unusual things with common things (within limits). I love this so much, it is going on my “Out There” post on my humor website: http://stressbuster1.com!

I think the ones advertising the Anagram Bookshop are fake, but the rest look real. I’ve seen sculptures like the ones near the top that are all carved out.

  39. Marsupial says:

These are totally awesome. I have a ton of textbooks that I thought I do a book burning on, but this is even better. Thanks.

  40. Maryellen says:

These are awesome! I might try to make some art out of my old books cause these all look AMAZING!!

  41. Assepoes says:

Heel erg leuk, ik heb nog wel een paar boeken over kan ik mee aan de slag.

  42. kate says:

As a former used bookstore owner, I can tell you that there were many books in multiple copies that sat for 5 years without ever being picked up. An attempt at donation to the library was respectfully rejected. The local thrift stores didn’t want them. Attempts at selling for cheap via ebay fell flat. And finally, contacted a pro-literacy group that advertised they’d take all “unwanted” books. When the time came to package and send, the instructions specifically stated “no used books without prior permission”.

I’d have rather seen them go into creative pursuits like the ones represented here than the landfill (where they did end up).

    LOVE the bookshelves especially!

  43. HELLO says:

Only the three near the bottom before the sculptures looked photoshop to me.
All amazing! I’m glad old books are given new life!
