Just because you don’t enjoy reading a good book, doesn’t mean there aren’t many other uses for all of those books piled up in the attic.

  11. And here’s another bonus for all of you who don’t like to read: Your children won’t either; you won’t understand why, but you’ll keep trying to get them to read, but you yourselves never will. And to think, at one time being literate was deemed fairly important.

  12. I love to read and I have raised three of my four children to enjoy it also. I have been tested with a 2000 wpm reading speed and I have one child who reads nearly that fast as well. Some of the images here would be fun to try with the older books that I have in storage. I particularly love the shelves and lamps. Thanks for posting these images!

I’m an avid book collector, I’d rather buy a book and keep it on a shelf for a future re-read than borrow one from the library, coz you have to give it back! So .. neat, but… those poor books! lol

  22. Although I am also a “bookworm” (the reference itself indicating damage to books) I don’t see this as destruction of books. All creation begins and ends with destruction anyway. These are beautiful works of art and honestly I feel they are perfect for the bibliophile. I would love to stack some of my favorite tomes on that “out of control” shelf. I also like the fact that some of these (obviously not all) could be undertaken by the average creative person. (i.e. “book” shelves or perhaps the book lighting).

    Seriously, if someone’s not going to read a book and they’re just going to throw it away, better to turn it into a work of art than let it end up in the trash pile. These are great.

  39. I think my favourites are the abstract ones with the pages all fanned out and curled into those beautiful patterns! I also find the person carved out of a stack of books extremely clever. The octopus and the ship is amazing too! I love how it literally looks like it’s exploded out of the pages, and it’s alive. I remember experiencing that same kind of vividness as a child, when stories would come alive. They’re all good, photoshopped or not! (I don’t think they are though..) Also, can it really be called a waste when these pieces, alone, have brought so much imagination and creativity to people?

  42. I am a long time collector of books and an elementary school librarian and I love this site. For those of you concerned about books being used for art consider the following… When I came to my present school it had not been weeded for 30 years. I thought I would take some of the old books to my local used bookstore for exchange credits. The owner set aside the bulk of books that I brought in and said no one would want to purchase them and bad as it sounded, she would put them in the dumpster. Well, many of those books are being turned into works of art for my library…a decorative bird house, a reading bench for a stuffed animal and books with dollhouse doors or windows on the cover with witty sayings.

  44. I have been conflicted by the use of the books, but love them enough to want to keep them around. So making them into art that can be appreciated and loved is good because it tells the next generation that we loved them. Being able to see the words and stories in art form also inspires the viewer to ask about the book or seek it out. This is the total opposite of burning, tossing, or destroying. This is Loving.
    I like it!

  66. Okay, I can see how someone would think to make this. Thinking perhaps a book-lover would purchase somethings like these because they like books… however; the books are destroyed. Why would they want to display abused books? What if I wanted to read one of those? Why weren’t these donated? What would the author think? It shows lack of consideration for books, not “Wow, that artist’s really into books.”

    Furthermore, if Moby Dick is chopped up in there I’m going to be pissed!

  76. My favourites have to be those that are interpreting the stories, some really nice paper engineering going on there. Most are just decorative though… but quite a large proportion of those the books look like they were made for the purpose, or at least disposable anyway.

    My least favourite is the guy painting on the books. What’s the point in that?

    It’s a fine line between respectful reinterpretation and destruction. I sit on both sides of the fence on this one, but you’d have to be pretty close-minded to respond to this collection to be so black and white about it - there is so much variety here, so many different intents.

    Book Arts is a very interesting area; most people who do this kind of thing love books, the content, the physical object, everything about them. I’m not sure their intention would ever to be ‘ruin’ a book, whether that is what they end up doing [by your standards] or not.

  77. Most of these books were probably already damaged. If I knew that some library was disposing of damaged books I’d take them and make a fort heck yeah! These books aren’t being damaged there being saved. Do you think someone would go by a perfectly good book and chop it up? No, they’d take it from stuff people were already throwing out.     I do wonder if the little figurines sitting on the books in the anagram workshop posters are real paper or just made to look that way.

    The anagram pictures are also the only ones anyone could convince me were photoshopped. They are a bit cartoonish. If they were, that’s ridiculous for people to keep posting about them all being photoshopped cause many of the other art pieces are a lot more intricate.

  78. I’m quite worried by the person claiming a reading speed of 2000wpm. How can you possibly enjoy reading at that rate? At best that’s got to be a 50% comprehension rate, so any nuances of the story have got to lost / overlooked, as well as 100% of the enjoyment. I’d rather take my time with a book.

I’m sure these are not new books and even tho I would never put so much as a pencil mark in the books I read, I very much admire the time, creativity, and talent that went into these!People…stop being so narrowminded.I think that these are beautiful and it’s so much nicer to see a book being used to the very end (talk about recycling!) than to see it trashed just because it had water damage, or is just plain old, or unwanted. PS..I really loved the bookshelf!

  113. Ithaca, NY, USA, has a book sale twice a year to raise money for the Ithaca Public Library. A couple of weeks ago, they had 270,000 used books for sale. People come across the country and stay in tents for two days to be first in line.
    The price goes down each week for two-three weeks, open 2-3 days a week. It ends up with a paper grocery bag full for $1.
    People have made great finds.
    There are also DVD, CD’s, records,manuals, etc. as well as books.

    I work for a large public library. People donate lots and LOTS of books. We have a marvelous book sale every year, raises money for the Friends of the Library, BUT…you should see the stuff that people try to donate. 50 years of National Geographic. Encyclopedia sets from 1949. Grandpa’s books that have sat in the basement for 25 years, covered with mildew, homes for spiders. Books that smell like cigarettes, books that smell like whatever food has been cooked in the house, books that have suspicious stains and a piece of toilet paper as a bookmark…

    All of these people really feel the same way as you, Liz. Humans HATE to throw out books, or see them “desecrated”. My crackpot theory is that it all goes back to when books were a precious commodity, to be guarded with one’s life. Think about the burning of the library at Alexandria, or the controversy regarding so many books (some places still try to ban Huck Finn! F**in’ amazing!!) The image of Nazis burning books is seared on the collective unconscious. But most books nowadays are simple commodities, to be consumed and discarded like most other things these days.

    Stack ‘em, carve ‘em, paint ‘em, these artists’ hearts are in the right place, as much so as the well meaning folks who donate useless smelly junk. Try to see it as a celebration of books, not a desecration!

  135. I am attending college to become a teacher. I Love Lang. Arts but I am not a big fan of reading. Mainly b/c I was off my ADD meds for so long, I could never sit and concentrate long enough to get involved in the book.

To all of you people distressed over the plight of books, I highly doubt that the artists would buy brand-spanking new books and cut them out or glue them or whatever(except for the Alice in Wonderland one…they should have used mine. Mine’s literally falling apart). I’ve had to dispose of lots of outdated books from my school library, and I only wish I’d thought of doing something like this.

    As well, I found the “Alice In Wonderland” adaptation, though inspired, disturbing, for it reminded me that I once owned a first edition of that same tale.
    At the time, I was sharing a house with some guys who were not as enamored of the written word as I was. So, though I am pleased that my friends(?) chose not to freeze one winter’s night after having forgotten to order fuel oil for the empty tank in the basement, I was a bit more disturbed that the indiscriminate burning of books (and antique furniture) that were in my collection was the means of choice for keeping warm. Maybe I’m being hyper-sensitive, but I suspect that my house mates didn’t like me too much…;-)
    Many years later, as I watched the morning network news while enjoying a quick cup of coffee before leaving for the office, I suddenly felt as if regret were being used as a bludgeon, under which abuse I was struggling to sustain myself. The newscaster had just announced that a first edition Alice In Wonderland had just sold at auction that morning for $1.3M, a first edition not unlike the one that was used to lessen the night’s chill so many years before.
    So, though it’s great to curl up with a good book on a winter’s night while keeping warm by the fire, I don’t think I’ll ever be too distant from the heat I feel under the collar every time I recall that amazing experience of having once had, then lost, a treasured book. But it the loss of a book is my greatest loss then I do surely count my self blessed and most fortunate.

  147. People are so quick to say something’s photoshopped but don’t know the
    first thing to do when you open the application up. I suggest those who are saying “its photoshopped” or “fake!1111″ need to learn the basics of photoshop, do some tutorials, watch a few Adobe CS3 vids. Research photo-manipulation. Then study these pictures and then maybe your reason for “hating” can be valid. Until then, don’t right checks that your mouth/keyboard can’t cash.

  149. I worked in a bookstore and while it hurt me the first few times I had to ’strip’ a book (tear off the cover and return it to the publisher for credit), I got over it.

    Burning books is a statement about control and these books weren’t used for that. This is nothing more than wonderfully recycled art. Beautiful work!

  177. As a former used bookstore owner, I can tell you that there were many books in multiple copies that sat for 5 years without ever being picked up. An attempt at donation to the library was respectfully rejected. The local thrift stores didn’t want them. Attempts at selling for cheap via ebay fell flat. And finally, contacted a pro-literacy group that advertised they’d take all “unwanted” books. When the time came to package and send, the instructions specifically stated “no used books without prior permission”.

    I’d have rather seen them go into creative pursuits like the ones represented here than the landfill (where they did end up).

    LOVE the bookshelves especially!

  188. When I used to volunteer at a library, occasionally they would just toss out bags of books. I always salvaged any that looked interesting, but many were just thrown away. I would love to have seen them turned into such amazing art, particularly the books that had been damaged beyond the point of being legible.

  193. This is just personal opinion, but, I think any of you who think this artwork is Photoshopped or a travesty because the artist wrecked some books to create brilliant art. You need to re-evaluate and think about what it takes to make art, whether it was done in photoshop or not, the ideas behind each one are still creative and thought out. Isn’t that what art is all about?

Really, do you think they were using first edition copies off a Gutenberg press? These artists aren’t killing the meaning, they’re giving a concept new life.   196. Some of these are really cool ideas, I really like the shelves. To those of you who are complaining: how do you know what shape those books were in before? For all we know, it’s entirely possible that somebody’s 2 year old already took a box of magic markers to chapters 2-8 and rendered them unreadable. Or Fido could have thought he discovered a lovely new chew toy and mulched a few chapters. That, and really, does the world NEED a book of New York City zoning codes from 1975? Or the instruction manual for a betamax player?

  197. Books are just paper, glue, string, and ink. What’s the big deal with using them for purposes other than reading? I love books. I teach literature for a living, but what’s great about books isn’t the physical entity of the book - it’s the idea or the meaning that I cherish. I love books - but I don’t love paper, glue, string, and ink.

    And anyway, I’m sure a lot of those books were unmitigated crap. Just because it’s a book doesn’t mean it’s good - and the poor don’t want crappy books any more than you do. When I worked at a shelter we used to get tons (literally) of old books that people donated - a few were decent, but most were stupendously bad books that folks were too cheap to dispose of properly so they sent them over to us so we could put them in our dumpster.

  200. WOW, there are books and there are books … and most ‘bestsellers’ would be being put to a better use if used in this way. Lets face it, I doubt that any of the books used were either unique or particularly rare … as long as there are still readable copies who can complain.

    Some of the stuff was exceptional, and makes me wish that I had even a smidgen of the artists talent.

  204. photoshopped or not? i wanted to believe they were not even though i am not generally in favor of mutilation of books. so i examined closely the octopus (from “20000 leagues under the sea” maybe?).

    there is some odd blurring around x,y pixel location 288, 165. there are also some odd square artifacts at location 313, 172 and 337, 181. i’m no expert with photoshop but i would consider this evidence for *this photo alone* to have been photoshopped.

    you could try this yourself, of course.

    If at all we had no nature to teach us, may be we would not be advanced and developed like the way we are today!

    I do believe that, if we tell our children some stories with moral concept and make them learn how to relate, observe, and make comparisons, the world might be a very safe place to live in. As the concerned parents, we have to tell and sensitize our children about the threats which our planet earth is facing and then give them the suggestions and solutions. We have to tell them that in future they are to turn into adults and once they become one, it will be their responsibility too to teach their children too.
    We should as adults try our level best to eliminate the boundaries which may hinder our children to learn more from their spheres .Our children may be acquiring this kind of education at school, but once we happen to apply it more as parents, believe me it will have a very big impact on our children. I feel and need to see the future of our children being embroiled in loving and caring community. Our children should be taught to accept unity in diversity of mankind. We have to teach and tell them that, the popular and the infamous world conflicts which are prevailing today are due to issues like being self centered and selfishness.
    My role as a concerned parent is and has been to educate our children from all walks of life to love the gift of nature and appreciate and admire the advancement of man. If really we had no nature surrounding us to learn from, then we would not be able to learn and acquire skills and techniques we have today.
    In my project of educating our children at home, I have written almost 40 children books. My writings are simple and they are based on what our children see , feel, hear, touch and test every day. My writings are in two categories the first category is the collection of the short stories which can make some good cartoon movies and at the end of the story I give the true story of the animal characters mentioned in the story and the second is about nature and how man has learnt from nature to live the kind of life we have today.
    This kids book shows and explains how we might have adopted the Idea of constructing our buildings from the earliest engineers(The Termites and the Ants)

    What we might assume to be our bad neighbors, might in other way our good neighbors.
    My cause is to see to it that, I educate the young people/the kids from all walks of life about the gift of nature. My writings are simple and are very easy to digest by any child and children teachers. I use the simple examples of whatever we see, feel, smell, taste and hear to tell my story/stories of how man has advanced with the assistance of his surroundings.
    My message is meant to make our youngsters to love the gift of nature and appreciate technology as well. I believe through this kind of effort, we can create a better and a safe global environment.

  236. I too am both in awe of the display and repulsed by the destruction of so many books. I have to say that the photoshopped remarks are way overdone IMO.   271. Its funny to see people leave comments that say “shopped” or “fake” because they really do not understand the capabilities of photoshop, and graphic editing. I’m not saying it is impossible, BUT it would be much more easy to actually make some of these then to photoshop them up.

  272. I’ve seen book art, but this is ridiculous. I am definitely a reader, but to me the book itself didn’t matter, because I got to keep the story. There are a few books I’ve kept in my posession to enjoy again, but I generally will not re-read books. I want to read everything else that’s out there. This amazing art makes me feel somewhat guilty for treating books like wrappers.

  289. I have to agree with the one who was torn between WOW and HEATHENS. I love to read books, but these are just amazing.
    There are many which are far too destructive for me to appreciate fully. I’m sure someone who was less committed to reading books ten thousand times than I am would appreciate the art a little more.
    The last few pictures aren’t destructive though… I wonder if I could do that…
    If anyone reading this has the inclination (and the books), I challenge you to make a work of art of them stacked up like the painted face… but with only the natural covers of the book, no paint involved!
    I’m not really an artistic person, and I don’t have the patience, otherwise I’d do it myself.

  319. I own a used bookstore and am delighted to see discarded books used as items of art. Would I prefer seeing them read? Of course! But I see too many books hidden away in boxes, in closets, or in the trash. At least as art, these books will serve a useful purpose and remind people of the joy one can get from books. Bravo!

  324. I know all these images already (I’m quite the fan) and I can assure you that all but 3 are completely genuine. One set of work will be in an exhibition in June and the one of Alice in wonderland is done by sue blackwell who has also done work for vogue magazine. I think the three, not photoshoped but done using 3D software, are quite noticeably different.

    As for it being a waste of a book, have you ever been to a charity shop? I think the world can spare a few books for art and yes even the well loved ones as they have been printed and reprinted for everyone to enjoy.

    If you look into the terms “artist books” and “altered books” you’ll find that this is well-established form of artistic expression that was around well before photoshop. It is the content of books that needs to be preserved and honored,and a few hundred or thousand copies in libraries for the really timeless tomes. But not every physical copy ever printed! Book-lovers, you really don’t need to feel bad about this. Just enjoy the art.

  333. Old books are great for starting fires when camping too. It’s important to recycle for the good of the earth.I bought these really nice Victorian age books with leather covers and gold inlays. Hollowed them out to make book safes and sold them on Ebay. The old paper from making the cut outs really burned well.

Seems a bit conceded to me and just for your info, the world championship of speed reading contestants can read 1000-2000 WPM with 50% comprehension!   350. There are so many books out there that it does not hurt to lose a few for artistic expression. If the book is water damaged, a few copies of the 10,000 printed etc then what is the harm. As to the Alice in Wonderland, I am quite positive that the artist would never use a first edition, and the book was probably damaged in some way. Here is another thought, At the book store what do you think happen to all the books that are not sold? the covers are ripped off and the books are either thrown away, recycled, or sent back to the publisher for the same to happen there. The art of the written word is strong enough that the “Brain Candy” can be used for art. However I would like to see some artist use the medium of the magazine for this. Think about how many of those are published a month and people rarely ever keep them for future enjoyment.

  352. I teach art to high school students and this is an awesome way to teach creative thinking! We create altered books from discarded books that are donated to us. It’s as much about the process as it is the end product. Books are not things to be worshiped but appreciated. What a wonderful way to appreciate books that are otherwise headed to the dumpster. A lot of people are complaining of the miss use of books. my girlfriend manages a used book store, they buy every book from the public that comes in to make sure none are thrown away improperly. they end up recycling a full dumpster almost every day because they cant sell many of them for even pennies! Books are great & should be saved but we dont need billions of copies of every Stephen King & Danielle Steel book ever print in circulation for ever!

There are just too many books in circulation these days, to the point where we can’t even find people to donate them too. And honestly, a lot of books are just garbage to begin with. Nora Roberts, John Grisham, Stephen King…I see HUNDREDS of these a day…every day! Its silly to think we can keep every book ever printed, its not even possible!   375. This is definitely a tricky one for me (and clearly for lots of other people, having read the comments)

    Admittedly some beautiful work shown above. I guess many of these are less offensive than simply turning hardback books with attractive covers into notebooks (a la http://www.reboundbooks.net) but I still find it hard to come to terms with this. For example one of the volumes the ‘book-shelf’ is made of, “Out of Control” by Kevin Kelly, is a *really good book*. Interestingly, the author has made the text of this particular book available online for free:

    But does that mean that physical copies of the book are now worthless?

    Who gets to decide which books have had a ‘full life’ and are now nothing more than raw materials, and which ones should be treasured? Isn’t there the faintest whiff of fascism about it?   394. The same could be said of any creative material, Santa. Some people have no dishes, shall we forbid the use of clay? Some people have no shoes, shall we use no leather either? I love books as much as any bookworm (what an ironic term for someone who loathes their destruction), but also appreciate the artistic use thereof. And why not? Books can just as easily be reprinted. These are beautiful. And the sculpture-pieces, with the pages replaced by scenes from the story, strike me powerfully. Why whine about something like this?

    and rebecca, maybe you didn’t hear that folks with kindles recently had their orwell novels ‘revoked’ over rights issues. that alarming power, coupled with the mutability of the net, makes me grateful to have a personal library of many, many /books/. they may be prey to bugs, fire, damp, and theft, but no executive many miles away can press a button and make my books vanish–or change in some way.

    i love books, but i know some of them to be mere waste of trees. these artworks are anything but that.

    The smell of old paper, watching pages yellow with age are all part of a book’s appeal to a bibliophile. But when books aren’t even used but burnt, turned to mush…. wouldn’t you agree this is the better option?

  426. I saw the first pictured sculpture by Tom Bendtsen at Toronto’s art festival Nuit Blanche last year. It was unfinished, but it was still amazing.

While I feel sad at books being destroyed at the same time I’m thinking that it’s not like there are no other copies of Alice in Wonderland anywhere, perhaps some just as loved or more valuable. I’m sure these books are not the only ones of their kind in existence so I can live with it, especially when they’re made into something beautiful.

  447. The books have not gone to waste. They were enjoyed as a book then recycled to make art. Would you rather they end up in the trash just to add to our landfills? Or even burned to add more to our already way too polluted air? Books are so cheap nowadays if you know where to look. You should see what thrift shops do with books they cant sell.

    I LOVE to read and I think these are beautiful works of art. Do you know how many books get thrown out every year? That bookstores instead of mailing the books back, rip the covers off and mail those back to save on postage? Guess where the rest of the book ends up. In the dumpster. There are tons upon tons of books that no one buys or old books that you can no longer read or the pages have started to decay. Instead of throwing out and wasting these books, art can be created and the books can provide enjoyment through other means.

    Books will soon be a thing of the past, with Kindle becoming the norm. I will never give up a physical book, but the trends I see around me don’t support a very literary future. At least these pieces of art can remind the younger generations that books exist and will always be there, allowing their imaginations to grow, instead of technology doing all of the thinking for them.

    So congrats to all the wonderful artists who made these pieces of art. I think it is beautiful!

  457. Not everything is photoshopped but, yes, some are. I.e. the one with the octopus (I think it may be the kraken… not sure) and the ship, as well as the couple of pictures before it. They’re an advertisement. You know, kind of, get lost in books kind of deal. But I’m fairly sure that those are the only ones that are. As far as my two cents on if it’s a good use for books or not, if you’re not going to read them, give them to someone who will. But if they’ve seen better days, why not give them new life in a beautiful sculpture?

  466. Though I agree with Sallar when it comes to the destruction of books and trees, I will say that a lot of these pieces are fantastic. The creativity is amazing, and the attention to detail is just crazy!

    I particularly enjoy the mural being painted on the wall of books. It seems quite ethereal, and almost draws me in to want to read one of the books she is emerging from. Maybe that’s just me, but I like it!

  473. A romantic part of me that has a sentimental attachment to books, their worn-out tactile sensation, their curdling smells, their capacity to be a repository of memories, including margin scribbles and food stains, made me loath to turn my reading into a “digital experience.”

    But sentimentality had to be thrown out the window when it was clear to me that my nearsightedness had made reading, even with prescription glasses, a more tiresome experience than ever. Secondly, my office is crammed with books and I fear that one more book will sink my house through its foundation and several hundred feet under landfill.

    These considerations compelled me to get the Kindle 2, an electronic book reader that is mostly successful in its objective to be a pleasurable, convenient electronic alternative to people who, for various reasons, are getting away from paper-and-glue manuscripts.

    Grade for Kindle 2’s Success at Achieving My Objectives: A

    I find it far easer to read the Kindle than read books. I can with one touch increase the size of the script to make reading less straining on my eyes.

    Also, the Kindle can store thousands of books so my goal to keep books out of my house should be doable.

    Grade for Kindle 2’s Ease of Use: A

    It took me five minutes to learn four buttons: Home, Menu, Page Turning, and the 5-Way Controller for basic functions: accessing content, buying content, book-marking content, increasing font size, turning pages.

    The Kindle beats printed paper manuscripts for both reading ease and page-turning. Even holding the Kindle is easier on the hands.

    Note taking, highlighting select passages, audio settings have a longer learning curve, about a half hour of reading the Kindle’s User Guide.

    The battery life is great so you can confidently read the Kindle all day during travel without worrying about plugging it into the included recharger.

    I can download a book in five seconds from the Whisper Net anywhere in the United States. This is amazing. Proprietary publishing licensing, which differs from country to country, prevents Amazon from making the Kindle international.

    One weakness is spacing. Sometimes there will be large hunks of space between two words, so there appears to be the occasional formatting glitch.

    On the bottom left of the screen, the Kindle tells you what percentage of the manuscript you’ve read, so if you’re OCD you may find yourself peeking at “how far you’ve gone” more often than you want to.

    Grade for Device Look and Layout: A

    The device looked smaller than I expected, especially its thinness. It’s a handsome device, not too cluttered. Its aesthetic is spare, intelligent, and clean.

    Grade as a Newspaper Substitute: C Plus or B Minus

    I subscribed on a trial basis to the Los Angeles Times and cancelled soon. The Kindle cannot match the Internet version of the newspaper. Navigating through the different sections is easy enough, but without images, the experience is too austere. I think I might by a single newspaper if I was traveling but for a daily basis the newspaper experience is not compelling enough.

    Price: B Minus

    I’d like to see the Kindle 2 half of its current cost, but I have to remind myself: Amazon does not charge you monthly fees for using its Whisper Net, so you’re paying more upfront.

    Conclusion

    It’s apparent that Amazon wants the Kindle to be for books what the iPod is for music. The Kindle is a significant technological breakthrough that will indeed revolutionize the way we read.

    On a personal note, the Kindle has helped me because I’m reading more now than I was when I was struggling with paper manuscripts. Amazon and I are both winners.

  483. I love to read and I have raised three of my four children to enjoy it also. I have been tested with a 2000 wpm reading speed and I have one child who reads nearly that fast as well. Some of the images here would be fun to try with the older books that I have in storage. I particularly love the shelves and lamps. Thanks for posting these images!

  489. Saw an artical on HGTV about ‘paper countertops’; countertops being made out of compressed paper. Seems VERY green to me and would look great as a countertop to read with all my recipe books mounted on them. I have big kitchen counter spaces, but alas not enough recipes books to complete the project.

  498. I love it. As a bookseller I have to tell all of you that are worried about the desecration of these books that millions (yes millions) of books end up in landfills each year. Many books are way overpublished and once read are discarded. At that point they cease to become a collection of inspiring ideas and instead become a collection of paper. This artwork adds to the beauty of our world and feeds the soul. Some might say that is the highest purpose of the written word. I’d put a couple of cushions on the chair though.

  507. The person who said they read at 2000 wpm is a liar. No one reads that fast, not even the fastest speed readers. The top 1% of the world’s fastest speed readers only make 1000 wpm with a comprehension rate of 85% - which comes out to only 850 ewpm. Try doing some research before posting ridiculous statements about you and your ‘kids’ online. Even average readers only manage 200 wpm with a comprehension rate of 60%.

For those who, like me, cringe when they see this sort of thing done to a book, and who suggest donating the books instead of destroying them: I have worked for many years in a highly specialized used book store (no latest best-sellers) and in libraries, and I hate to tell you but it is true that the world is full of books which are of no use or interest to anyone. They are good only for trash. We can’t sell them; nobody will ever read them. If somebody can make something beautiful or clever out of them, it’s better than the the dump. Sadly, just because it is a book does not mean that it will be of value; sometimes all that the library or the charity bookstore can do anything with it is toss it out. (Please, please, please, don’t try to donate anything with even a tiny whiff of mildew!)

  527. I get that this is really creative and all but it just feels like a book burning to me. I like books and feel bad when they are destroyed. I like art and feel bad when it is hindered. I realize that books are material things and yes you can always print more but when and how does a book lose value? Books are material things as long as they are unread. They’re just ink and paper but when you read them they turn into intangible thoughts that spur on new thoughts and ideas. People can argue that “hey at least they didn’t end up in a landfill!”. What kind of person would throw a book in the garbage? I also realize art spurs new thoughts and ideas as well, so I don’t know it just seems like an awful waste. This is one time when I would have rather seen something that was photoshopped I guess. Okay one last thing, If someone made an ice sculpture replica of the statue of liberty entirely out of starving childrens tears and UN food aide it would still be art but what is the piece really saying and what’s the harm?

  528. Capital is incredibly tight in my family proper now so several extras are already eliminated from our budget. The very first issue to go was our cell phone plan and cable wasn’t far behind. At first I thought this would be a huge issue as my husband likes to watch sitcom re-runs. Yet, this hasn’t been a difficulty as he is able to Watch Frasier Online. also as other favorites of his. I’m glad he discovered these as I don’t want him to lose everything he loves. Thankfully, I’m capable to write part of our Web fees off for my employment so we didn’t have to get rid of that also. I think that would have been the final straw for him.
